Oregonians have an old saying, "If you don't like the weather, just wait a couple minutes - it'll change." We're used to clouds, rain, sun, blue sky, wind, and even hail with thunder and lightening - sometimes even all in one day. Until we decided to plant a vineyard and start farming, we didn't really pay that much attention to the weather, other than to be thrilled when it was warm and sunny, and complain when it was wet and grey. But that all changed when the plants went into the ground. As the plants matured and we began harvesting, Dave suddenly turned into a farmer. He studies weather forecasts and trends, he walks the rows and checks on the plants, he tastes the fruit to see what impact the heat/humidity/rain/wind is having on the fruit. And he's even been heard muttering under his breath about the weather. Yes, he's a farmer alright.
Without the daily observation of the vines, it's sometimes hard to understand the sometimes dramatic affect the weather has on the resulting fruit and the juice that ends up in the bottle. It's also challenging to remember specific details about the weather of each vintage year, and what the wine was like as a result.
So, we created a Vintage History document that talks about the weather and the wine of each vintage we've had here at ArborBrook. We hope you find it of interest!
